adidas Superstar

The Superstar was designed in 1969 and launched in 1970 as a low-top basketball shoe, the first with a rubber shell toe. adidas credits Chris Severn, who worked with Horst Dassler on the earlier Supergrip and Pro Model; the Superstar grew out of those two shoes and feedback from players. Severn estimated that three quarters of players in the American pro leagues wore one of the three.

In 1986 Run-D.M.C. released My Adidas, and an adidas employee at their concert saw the crowd hold up their Superstars, the moment adidas dates as the start of its non-athletic promotions. The shoe returned in 2003 in fifty colours and Pharrell's Supercolor collection followed in 2015.
