As the name suggests, the Shepard Fairey The High Cost of Free Speech Print (Signed, Edition of 575) was created to exemplify Fairey’s philosophy of the importance of protests, questioning authority, and the pursuit of justice. Fairey cited punk music as an inspiration for his philosophy, and the print was made in collaboration with Sean Bonner, the previous art director for punk label Victory Records. Bonner is a photographer, activist, writer, and creative, and allowed Fairey to illustrate a print based on one of his Instagram photos. The Shepard Fairey The High Cost of Free Speech Print was limited to 575 prints, and displays a protester being handcuffed to the ground with a small streak of blood running down the temple area. The Shepard Fairey The High Cost of Free Speech Print (Signed, Edition of 575) was released in March 2021 for a retail price of $80.
