Pádel shoes: which sole for which court
· By Redacción HYPEIBIZA
Most pádel courts are artificial grass with sand, and they need a herringbone sole. Padel and clay versions both have one; a flat hard-court sole slips.
Choose the sole by the court you play on. On artificial grass with sand, which is most clubs, wear a herringbone sole: a padel version or a clay version. Keep flatter hard-court soles for cement and indoor courts without sand.
Do not play in running shoes. Their soft, high foam rolls over on side steps, and their outsoles are made for forward motion. A pádel shoe has a lower, firmer base and a reinforced side.
Herringbone grips the sand
A herringbone pattern is a row of zigzag grooves across the outsole. The sand on an artificial grass court fills the grooves and lets the shoe grip and slide in a controlled way. A smooth sole sits on top of the sand and slips.
Most shoes sold as padel use a full herringbone or a herringbone mixed with other zones. Bullpadel's Vertex and Hack lines use Vibram rubber outsoles for extra grip and wear.

Padel or Clay: the same shoe, two soles
ASICS sells several court models twice, once as Padel and once as Clay, with different style codes. The upper and the cushioning are the same. The outsole changes.
ASICS models with a Padel and a Clay version in the catalogue:
| Model | Grade | Padel code | Clay code |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gel-Resolution X | Men / Hombre | 1041A492 | 1041A485 |
| Gel-Resolution X | Women / Mujer | 1042A285 | 1042A277 |
| Gel-Dedicate 8 | Women / Mujer | 1042A241 | 1042A255 |
Both soles are herringbone, so both work on a sandy pádel court. The clay version is made for tennis on clay, where the pattern runs across the whole sole. Many pádel players use clay versions, and a clay pair also covers a game of tennis on clay.
If the codes confuse you, read the product name. The page says Padel or Clay, and the code changes with it. A Gel-Resolution X without either word is usually the all-court tennis version, with a flatter sole.

When a hard-court sole makes sense
Some indoor clubs and older outdoor courts are cement or resin with no sand. There, a herringbone sole can feel too grippy and wear fast on the rough surface. An all-court or hard-court sole, with a flatter mixed pattern, lasts longer.
If you play at more than one club, pick the sole for the court you use most. For mixed use, a padel sole is the safer choice, because a flat sole on sand is the combination that causes falls.
The pádel brands we list
The pádel shoes in our catalogue come from two kinds of brand. Some are pádel brands first: Bullpadel, Drop Shot and Nox. Others are sports, tennis or sneaker brands with a pádel line: adidas, ASICS, K-Swiss, HEAD, Joma, Wilson, PUMA, Mizuno, Munich and Dunlop.
- adidas: Crazyquick and Courtquick, with Padel in the name.
- ASICS: Gel-Resolution X, Gel-Dedicate 8, Gel-Challenger 15 and Solution Speed FF, most in Padel and Clay.
- Bullpadel: Vertex and Hack with Vibram soles, plus Ionic and Indiga.
- K-Swiss: Express Light 3 and Hypercourt Express 2, sold for tennis and pádel, some as Clay.
- HEAD: Sprint Pro 4.0 in Padel and Clay, plus Motion Pro and Motion Team as Padel.
Whatever the brand, the word on the product page tells you the sole. Padel and Clay mean herringbone. All Court and Hard Court mean the flatter pattern. If the page says neither, check the outsole photo for the zigzag grooves before you buy.
Fit, wear and kids' sizes
Pádel shoes should fit snug at the heel and the sides, with a thumb's width at the toe. A loose shoe lets the foot slide inside on every lateral stop. Buy in the size you wear in other court or training shoes from the same brand.
Watch the outsole. When the herringbone wears smooth under the ball of the foot, the shoe stops gripping, even if the upper still looks new. That is the moment to replace it.
Kids' versions exist for the main models, in GS sizes. They use the same sole types, so the court rule is the same for juniors.
