Sandals and clogs: how Crocs, Birkenstock and slides fit

Crocs come in whole sizes that each cover two EU numbers. Birkenstock sizes by EU number and width. Slides mostly follow the brand's trainer chart.
Sandals and clogs size differently from trainers. Crocs sell whole sizes only, and each one covers two EU numbers. Birkenstock sells one EU number per size, in two widths. Slides from adidas and Nike follow those brands' own charts.
Knowing which system you are in saves a return. Below are the rows that matter for each one, then the models we list.
Crocs: one size, two EU numbers
A Crocs Classic Clog labelled M9 / W11 is EU 42-43. The same pair fits a men's US 9 and a women's US 11, because Crocs is unisex. There are no half sizes.

The Classic Clog is roomy, and the heel strap holds it on. If your EU size sits on the edge of two rows, most people take the smaller one. Notice the step from 39-40 to 41-42: EU 40 and EU 41 sit in different Crocs sizes, although they are next to each other.

Birkenstock: EU number and width
Birkenstock labels every pair with one EU number and a width: regular or narrow. On the chart, narrow sizes carry an N, as in 39N. Regular suits average and wide feet. Narrow suits slim feet, and many women's pairs come in narrow.

Two details in that table catch people out. The UK column jumps from 5.5 to 7 between EU 39 and EU 40, so a UK 6 has no exact row. And the US women's number is two above the men's number for the same EU size.
A Birkenstock should leave a little room in front of the toes and behind the heel, so the foot sits inside the raised edge of the footbed. If your toes touch the front lip, go one size up.

- Boston: the closed-toe clog, often in suede, with the same cork footbed.
- Madrid: a single strap, here in the waterproof EVA Big Buckle version.
- Gizeh: a thong sandal with a toe post.

Slides and flip-flops follow other charts
The adidas Adilette uses whole UK sizes, and the EU number moves in uneven steps: UK 8 is EU 42, UK 9 is EU 43 and UK 10 is EU 44 1/2. Nike slides such as the Victori One and the Calm use the standard Nike chart, with half sizes.
Havaianas flip-flops are sold in paired EU sizes, like Crocs, so each size covers two numbers. With any slide, the foot should not hang over the back edge.

Cork, EVA or foam: pick by where you wear them
For the beach, the pool and wet floors, choose a pair that does not mind water. Crocs, Adilette slides, Havaianas and the EVA versions of the Arizona and the Madrid all rinse clean and dry fast.
For long walks in town, a cork footbed gives more support. It is firm at first and takes the shape of your foot over the first weeks of wear. Keep cork and suede out of the sea and the rain, because water dries out the cork and marks the suede.
Soft foam slides such as the Nike Calm sit in the middle. They are fine wet, they feel cushioned on hard floors, and they are made for short walks rather than a full day out.
Clogs for colder months
Clogs do not stop in September. The UGG Goldenstar clog uses UGG's own chart, with half sizes in the women's range, and Crocs sells lined versions of the Classic Clog with a soft inner layer.
A lining takes up room inside the shoe. In a lined Crocs, stay on your usual row rather than sizing down.
