The launch price of the best-selling trainers rose 13% since 2019: more than the footwear price index, less than the general one

We followed the launch price of 56 trainer lines, from the Air Force 1 to the Samba, across 16,822 releases from 2019 to 2025. On average, a trainer in this basket launches today 13% dearer in dollars and 12% dearer in euros. Over the same years, Spain's footwear price index from INE rose 10% and the general index 22%. Trainers got dearer than other footwear, but less so than the cost of living.

The price index is from INE (servicios.ine.es), national annual average, base 2021. The launch price is in US dollars, as the brands publish it in the United States.

What we found

Data of 5 November 2026, with the full years from 2019 to 2025. It is the list price in dollars that the brands publish in the United States. 118 prices come from the brand's own website or a dated release article; the rest from our catalogue.

Until 2021 the launch price barely moved: the index went from 100 to 102.9. In 2022 it jumped. That year, 67% of the lines that had also launched the year before rose in price and only 2% fell; the index reached 108. Since then it has risen more slowly, to 113.1 in 2025.

The biggest rises are in the low and mid-priced classics. The Air Force 1 '07 went from $90 to $115, 28%, the same as the Air Jordan 1 Low. The adidas Gazelle, Superstar and Stan Smith went from $80 to $100, 25%, like the New Balance 574, from $79.99 to $99.99. The Air Max 90 rose 23% and the Air Jordan 1 High OG went from $160 to $185, 16%.

At the other end, 12 lines launch today at the same price as in their first year with data: the Ultraboost at $180, the Chuck 70 at $90, the 550 at $110 and the 9060 at $150, among others. Only one fell: the Vans Authentic, from $60 to $55. When the general index rises 22% and a line's price does not move, that trainer is cheaper in real terms.

By brand, Jordan rose 20% and Nike 18%, twice the footwear index. adidas and New Balance rose 11% and ASICS 6% since 2021. Of the 56 lines, 27 rose more than the footwear index over their own years and 13 more than the general index.

In euros, at the European Central Bank's annual average rate, the rise is 12%. 2022 weighed more for anyone paying in euros: the dollar reached its strongest point of the period against the euro and the euro index jumped to 114.8, against 108 in dollars.

The footwear price index rose less

What it means for you

If the line you want has not risen since 2019, like the Ultraboost, the Chuck 70 or the 550, it is cheaper today in real terms: the general index rose 22%.

The cheap classics rose most in per cent: a Gazelle or a Superstar launches today at $100, against $80 in 2019.

The launch price is not the final price. The same trainer can cost much less in a sale and at another shop.

What the data cannot tell you

It is the list price in US dollars. In Spain each brand sets its price in euros, which does not always follow the dollar; the euro series only applies the ECB rate.

We start in 2019 because before it the marketplaces list mostly special editions. In 2019 and 2020 our catalogue holds few basic colourways of some adidas and New Balance lines; where the brand published the price, we use that price.

When a brand raises a price in the middle of a year, the rise can show in the year after. We do not measure collaborations, special editions or resale prices.

Method

A fixed basket of the lines with the most releases, each in its general-release edition. The price of a line in a year is its base price: that of its basic colourways, the 20th percentile of its releases, or the list price the brand published. A chained index weighted by releases, 2019 = 100, against INE's price index.
