Data / Methodology
How we make the data studies
Which shops and which prices count, what we leave out and why. These rules hold for every study; each study adds its own below.
- Which shops count
- The shops shown on HYPEIBIZA that sell their own stock. Resale marketplaces, shops we only link to and shops that sell to one country only are left out.
- Which price counts
- The selling price each shop shows for a product in stock. The daily price of a product at a shop is the price of its cheapest size in stock that day: we do not keep a price per size.
- Euros only
- We compare euros with euros. Offers in pounds or another currency stay out until we add a daily exchange rate.
- Three shops or more
- The studies that compare shops count only products that at least 3 shops sell at the same time.
- Price errors
- When the dearest offer of a product is more than 3 times the cheapest, or today's price is more than 3 times another day's at the same shop, we treat it as a unit error (a price in cents) and leave it out. Each study says how many cases it drops.
- Prices without VAT
- The Topforsport shops (11teamsports, Top4running and Weplayhandball) reach us without VAT. They stay out of every comparison between shops until the data is fixed. They stay in the studies that compare a shop with itself, such as the crossed-out price study.
- Shop country
- The home country of the company that sells, even when it sells from a Spanish-language site: Footshop counts as Czechia and Sports Direct as the United Kingdom. There are two exceptions. A chain listed with one shop per country (Zalando ES and Zalando DE, ABOUT YOU ES and ABOUT YOU DE) counts each shop in its own country. A brand's official store for Spain (adidas, Nike, Converse) counts as Spain.
- Other shops
- The tables show the shops that weigh most and add up the rest in one "Other shops" row. Countries under 1 % of the total add up in "Other countries". The CSV carries the same rows.
- How much history
- We keep daily prices from 29 July 2026. The number of shops we follow grew fast in October, so 30-day windows weigh most in their last week.
- Aggregates only
- We publish totals, medians and percentages. No table carries a single product, a link to a shop or the time of a check.
The studies
No shop is always the cheapest
We look at the last 30 full days. For each product and day with a price in euros at 3 or more visible shops that sell their own stock, we find the shop with the lowest price that day. A tie shares the day between the shops. A shop without a price that day, for example out of stock, cannot win it.
A shop's share is its part of all those product-days; "wins when present" divides its days as the cheapest by the days it had a price. Leader changes count only products with 14 or more days of data; in a tie the leader is the first shop in alphabetical order, so a tie can count as a change. 11teamsports, Top4running and Weplayhandball are left out: their stored prices carry no VAT.
Same trainer, 41% dearer depending on the shop
We count the products that at least 3 visible shops selling their own stock have in stock, priced in euros. Marketplaces, shops that sell to one country only and the per-size prices of resale shops are left out. For each product we compare the cheapest offer with the dearest one and with the median one. Products whose dearest offer is more than 3 times the cheapest are left out: they are usually price-unit errors or different items under one product.
We give the median of those gaps and the share of products where the dearest offer is 20 % or more above the cheapest. Running, trail and football boots are footwear; a product can be in more than one. The price band is the band of the cheapest offer. A segment needs 30 products or more. 11teamsports, Top4running and Weplayhandball are left out: their stored prices carry no VAT.
Crossed-out prices: three in ten reductions were cheaper before
We count the trainers each shop shows today with a crossed-out price at least 3 % above the selling price, in stock, at visible shops that sell their own stock. For each one we look at the lowest price we recorded at that shop over the 30 days before, only when it had a price on 14 or more of those days. Cases where that low is under a third or over three times today's price are left out: they are price-unit errors.
"Lower before": the 30-day low is 1 % or more under today's price. "Same": within 1 %. "Lower today": today is the low by 1 % or more. The daily series measures something else: how many trainers in stock are priced 3 % or more under their own 30-day median, not how many carry a crossed-out price.
Delivery to the Spanish islands, Ceuta and Melilla: who delivers
We read the delivery terms each shop we compare publishes and record the countries it says it delivers to, with a quote from the source. Each shop has a status: "verified" (the country list is complete), "partial" (it can be incomplete) or "unverified". So each figure per country is a minimum. The offer share is the part of all in-stock offers of the shops we show that sits at shops delivering to that destination.
The Canary and Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla come from the text of those terms, read shop by shop. "Yes" means the text says so; "implied yes" means the text excludes other Spanish regions by name and not this one. Shops with no text about a region count as "unclear", not "no". Only shops that deliver to Spain count.
